The Free Alchemy VST instrument by Camel Audio impressed me from the moment I started playing it. This synth is the baby brother to the full Alchemy synth and it does a good job in tempting me to buy the full version.
I started off with the arpeggiators and came across an almost warm but gritty sounding patch which I used to make Warm Blanket 120 bpm. Then I came across a ton of other great arps ranging from clean and staccato like Baker 125 bpm to pristine, bright and crystaline as heard in Ballerina 125 bpm.

1. Depending on what DAW you use, there are a few options. Sylenth1 is a 4-oscillator synth. That exact description is perfectly matched by Alchemy. Alchemy ships free with Logic Pro X, so if you are a Logic user, that’s already a huge bonus with all.
2. Apple has reportedly bought UK audio software developer Camel Audio, a company known for its instruments, plugins, and apps, including the respected Alchemy synth. Camel Audio mysteriously.

Alchemy has two seperate XY pads that can be used to control various parameters including different layers. Forest Arp 130 bpm for example has a trance like arp playing on top of a sweeping pad. These sounds can both be manipulated and tweaked individually. The XY pads do however have limitations in assigning parameters in this version which is of course a persuasive factor in buying the blown VST instrument.
The sound quality on this synth sounds quite nice and many of the sounds are a combination of synthesis and pre-recorded material. Upright 100 bpm for example is a lovely sounding upright bass which just couldn't be recreated using synthesis alone.
Thankfully there is much more variety than just common intruments. Jeppe 100 bpm is a great example of an eclectic, strange and bright preset that would be ideal for IDM or other experimental genres of music.
I was more than impressed with the Alchemy VST synth and definitely recommend you spend some time with it. If you sign up on the Camel Audio website they will also send you many additional free presets for this wonderful sounding VST instrument.
